2. Differentiate:

(a) Drone and worker bee.

Drone bee. Worker bee.
Smaller than queen bee and larger than worker bee. smallest in the bee colony.
They are the laziest bee in the hive. They are extremely hardworking bee in the hive.
It’s function is to fertilize the queen bee. It’s function is to collect nectar, feed royal jelly and bee bread to larva, construct the hive and protect the hive.

(b) Queen bee and worker bee.

They are the largest bee among all other bee’s in the hive. They are the smallest bee in the hive.
It’s main function is to lay eggs. It’s function is to collect nectar and construct the hive.
It coordinates and controls the hive. It protects the bee hive from danger and feed larva.

(c) Queen bee and drone bee.

Queen bee. Drone bee.
They are the largest bee in the hive. They are larger than worker and smaller than queen bee.
They contain sting. They does not contain sting.
They grew from fertilized eggs. They grew from unfertilized egg.
main function is to lay egg and control the hive. main function is to fertilize the queen bee.

3. Give Reason:

(a) Honey bee is called social insect.

→ Honey bee is called social insect because they are well disciplined and live in a colony like a society.

(b) Pasture land is required for bee farming.

→ Pasture land is required for bee farming because bee need’s flower’s to collect nectar and pollen for honey production and to sustain their colonies.

(c) Drone dies after mating.

→ Drone dies after mating because their genital organ are forcefully pulled during mating.

(d) Bees are multipurpose insects.

→ Bees are multipurpose insect because they play a crucial role in pollination, honey production and maintaining ecological balance by supporting plants growth and biodiversity.

4. Answer the following questions:

(a) Write the various types of bee found in the hive.

→ The various types of bee found in hive are:

  • Queen bee
  • Drone bee.
  • Worker bee.

(b) What is the function of the drone bee?

→ The function of the drone bee is to fertilize the queen been.

(c) If the queen bee dies forsome reason, who will control the hive?

→ If the queen bee dies, worker bees quickly raise a new queen by feeding royal jelly to young larva.

(d) How does the queen bee control other members of the hive?

→ The queen control other members of the hive by producing a special sented substance called pheromene.

(e) Write the uses of honey

→ The uses of honey are:

  • Honey can be used to prepare cake, candy and medicine.
  • Wax produced by them is used in cosmetics for the manufacture of cream, lipsticks and candles.
  • Honey and royal jelly can be commercially be sold and produced for sum of money.

(f) Describe the structure of the queen bee.

→ Queen bee is the largest and elongated bee in the hive. It have small and round head and sting is present at the end of abdomen. Their proboscis is short and covered with hair.

(g) Mention the function of the worker bee.

→ The functions of the worker bee is to collect nectar, constructing the hive, nursing young ones, protecting the hive etc.

(h) Explain how the division of labour occur in bees.

→ The division of labour in bees is based on age and physiological development. younger bees perform tasks inside the hive such as caring of brood cell and building honey comb. Older bees specially collect nectar and pollen from flower for food production and guarding the hive entrance. This division of labour ensures efficient function and productivity within the bee colony.

(i) Explain the lifecycle of honey bee with diagram:

Egg:

The queen bee lays egg which are white and elongated in shape. They are erect in the brood cell in first, slanted on the second and horizontal on the third day. The size of egg ranges from 1mm to 1.5mm.

• It’s types are fertilized and unfertilized. Queen and worker grow from fertilized and Drone bee grow from unfertilized egg.

Larva:

After 3 day of laying egg, the eggs hatch into larva. The larva stage lasts for about 5.5 days for queens, about 6 days for worker and about 7 days for drone bee. The larva actively feed in this stage. all larva are fed royal jelly for 3 days. After 3 days according to the bee they are fed. Queen bee will continuously receive royal jelly whereas worker and drone are fed bee bread after 3 days.

PUPA:

The pupa phase is an inactive phase in the life cycle of the bee in which it does not feed or move, but its structural changes are going on. In this phase, legs, wings and mouth parts are developed.

It lasts for 8 days, 12 and 14 days for queen, worker and drone respectively.

Adult:

After many changes, the pupa is transformed into an adult. The mandibles in the mouth of the newly formed adult bee chew the layer of wax sealed to the brood cell and emerge out.

(j) What is the process called in which a drone is developed from an unfertilized egg?

→ The process in which a drone is developed from an unfertilized egg is called parthenogenesis.

(k) When a farmer practices bee farming then income of other farmers in the locality also increase. Justify your reason.

→ When a farmer practices bee farming then income of other farmers in the locality also increases because, it plays crucial role in pollination. Bee helps to transfer pollen from the male part to female part which encourages pollination. By this cross pollination, the crops quality and quantity increase. The crops are then sold in more rate which increase the income of other farmers in the locality.

(l) Due to the problem of pasture land in the beekeeping area, bee keepers shifted the bees from there. After that there was a reduction in the yield of mustard crops nearby farmers. Base on this explain the relationship between beekeeping and agriculture production.

→ There was a reduction in the yield of mustard because, Bees are important for pollination so, they transfer one pollen grain to other plant with them which gradually increase the production of mustard. And we know Bees are one of the reason for pollination and they also balance the ecosystem.

(m) Look at the concept map and complete it.
